Once again the challenge is to creatively provide some insightfulness into my perception, my life, my understanding of the term Hobby!
Now I have always been up for a challenge and have had many Hobbies in my life from playing sports and participating in drill team in my younger years, then moving into fishing, hunting, sewing, woodworking, painting, calligraphy, floral design, gardening, you name it. I’ve gone from collecting dolls, wind chimes, and angels to limiting what collects dust in my home anymore.
So rather than display bits and pieces of all my likes throughout the years I was drawn to the relationship of one Hobby that has come up through the generations. You see my grandfather was a carpenter, my brothers, and nephews are carpenters, etc.
My grandfather was a very special man. He was kind, soft spoken and strong. I would follow him around the apple orchard for hours, or sit at his feet on the front porch listening to stories of the old west and coming to Idaho by wagon train, or stagecoach.
He built a merry-go-around in the orchard from an old wheel, not sure what kind of wheel for it was larger than a wagon wheel, long before school yards had merry-go-rounds.My grandfather worked many years for the railroad, but his true love was carpentry, so in his later years of life he would build miniature wagons and toys with great detail and precision. One of our most favorite things was an old rocking horse, from his unique design. Each of his children had one in their family and I remember distinctly rocking on that old horse and feeling like I was riding like the wind! Sometimes I even stood on the old rocking horse and pretended I was Annie Oakley...giggles! It provided many hours of fun and entertainment.
Some where along the line, as time moves on, we grew older, things get old, and broken, the old rocking horse disappeared from our life. Nobody ever forgot that wonderful rocking horse and the hours of fun and laughter it provided.
About 10 years ago, my brother remembering our grandfather decided to make each of his grandchildren a rocking horse to carry on the tradition. Since I was alone, he basically adopted my grandchildren and made one for my first grand daughter. It’s a more modern and smaller design than the rocking horse my grandfather built, but I have to say it has brought the same fun, laughter and adventure to my now four grand daughters.
He built the horse, but it was my responsibility to make it unique. So with my limited skills of painting, I chose to do a simple tole painting design. As you can see from the scuffs and chipped paint, this little horse has been ridden many hours, providing much laughter, and entertainment. Most of all, it brings a smile to my face and arouses that little corner of my heart that belongs to my grandfather tucked away in my memories to cherish forever.
THAT is what I was waiting for some one to post the origin of the word..from hobe horse ..fantasic thank you thank you thank you...i so wanted a shot of one..jgh

What a nice story behind the images! It made me smile :) I have (had) a rocking horse too...and know well the fun! My four kids have also used it. Such precious gifts from your grandfather and brother!
An enchanting story of memories, love, and traditions accompanies your picture! All of it delightful! Your grandfather certainly left a number of wonder gifts, not all of them in woodwork, some in heart too. thank you for sharing this with us! -janeen
Working with wood is such a great talent. It's so nice that you have these wonderful memories of your grandfather. And the family collaboration on projects is a special bond. I bet the kids loved these works of love.
What a heartwarming story. I think your paint work on the horse is just perfect and with it come all the new memories being made to treasure for a long time.
It is very special when a hobby becomes a tradition and in turn that becomes a keepsake and a living memory. Thank you for sharing the beautiful story. What a beautiful legacy that your grandfather left, not only in his work but in all the wonderful people. It brings joy to mt heart to read this and see the pictures! Thank you for your visit and comments! Enjoy your weekend!

What a lovely story of a family tradition, a great picture of a horse made with love that brought joy. It brings back wonderful memories - my son's great grandfather (also a carpenter) made him a rocking "hobby" horse, before I had a dgital camera /:-)
Great story and fond memories. My rocking horse from childhood has long since been retired but I remember the fun it gave me and I, it. Certainly a great hobby to have!
Thanks for passing my way and you kind comment. 8=)
such a great photo thanks for stopping by. You know things that we make are more precious than things we buy. It is the time effort and love not the money. It is also the love that we put into it.
Wow! Isn't that awesome to have a hobby that brings joy for many generations....? The look on your granddaughter's face is so precious!! Wish I could have one....
Holy smackola, your pics and the tune just blew my heart jazzing into the middle of a rainbow with it's fine song. I swear it has made me ole black heart a little misty. (wipes drops from eyes) must be the dust in here. The Hobby Horse, My grandson Avery (2) has one, and now I have just got to paint it for him. Thanks for the love sharing and bless your Bro. What fun.
You've done a good job on painting the horse. It's a very nice family tradition and I can only assume you must be very happy to have a brother that makes horses for your grandchildren as well! And the song matches very good. Thanks for coming by my Hobby
What a nice story and memories. Its nice that we can pass those treasured memories on. I think we all can remember having a horse somewhat like yours to ride our day away on. I had one and I bought one for my son when he was young. Yours was more special because it was made with love.
I met a man several years ago who made rocking horses for adults! I wanted one, but could not justify the thousands he was asking for one. I'm telling you - it was so cool! I could see one in my living room. What a place to sit while watching tv, eh?
You asked about what programs I use - I use the Adobe line and a few other odds and ends. The fractals are created in Apophysis, Chaos and a couple others I can't remember right now.
What a touching story, Flutter...and such a nice tradition that your brother has decided to carry on. You've captured this hobby so nicely with the smile on the child's face.
Thanks for stopping by Romy's HOBBY and for the nice compliment.
Thanks for stopping. I do have many hobbies that I enjoy. Many that I could not even get on my slideshow. And yes, the benadryl is a akiller; knocks me out cold for most of the day. In fact I picked up my script and it went from my dr telling me 3 times a day to the script saying 4 times a day. I cannot eveen stay awake to take it that many times. LOL. Oh well. Today has been a bit better as it has been cold again here, but I took one, and out like a light for 3 hours. I love your picture. Have not seen a hobby horse yet. And altho' I did have a picture of one, I did not even think of that. What a neat family tradition to carry on. And your grandaughter on it is so cute. Happy Picture Perfecting and ahve a great week, lilangelwolf http://lilangelwolf.multiply.com/journal/item/263/Picture_Perfect-_Hobby
What a wonderful story and you did your Grandfather proud with the paint job. Enjoying the ~HOBBY ~ of another can be as rewarding as if it were your own. Thank you for visiting mine of my matchstick model. http://angeloo00oo.multiply.com/journal/item/71
